Take the red steps to flavor: Stigl Goldbrau
The Brewski Report Reviews Stiegl’s Premium Goldbrau Lager
File Date: 5.11.2011
File Name: Think Mr. Schwarzenegger drinks Austrian beer?
The Beer: Goldbrau Premium Lager
Type: German Pilsener
Serving: Bottle
Stats: 4.9% ABV
Brewer: Stieglbrauerei zu Salzburg GmbH
Web Site: www.stiegl.at
State/Country of Origin: Austria
Brewer Info: The path to success leads up ‘The Red Staircase’.The private Salzburg brewery combines tradition and innovation, forming a concept for success that makes Stiegl the strongest beer brand in Austria. The “beer with the red staircase” is an unmistakable symbol in Austria for “the art of brewing at the highest level.” Since 1998, Austria’s leading private brewery has consistently borne the conspicuous and unique brand logo. This means that the symbol of the Stiegl brewery can now be found everywhere, in circulars, TV ads, promotions, on glasses, advertising materials, and even on the furnishings in our house restaurants and shops. Stiegl is the largest private brewery in Austria, and is counted among the most successful companies in the country. The secret of this success: Top quality raw materials and production process, Europe’s most modern brewing technologies, innovative variety of products, motivated employees, commitment to tradition, economic sustainability, down to earth quality and the flexible decision-making structures of a family business.
Brewer Brand Hype: An elegant, refined beer with a pleasant hop bitterness. Lighter kiln-dried malt gives Stiegl Pilsner a light golden colour. With a marvellous bouquet of the finest Saaz hops, a characteristic bitterness and liveliness, it’s a favourite of beer connoisseurs who love a delicate hop note and fine, aromatic flavour.
Label: Since 1492. Imported Goldbrau Premium Lager Beer. Brewed and bottled by the Stiegl Brewery Salzburg, Austria. Brewed from malts, hops, yeast, mountain spring water according to the “Purity Laws of 1516″.
The Brewski Review: This ranks as one of my favorite beers. The taste was clean, crisp and enjoyable with just the perfect balance with the malt and hops. Not bitter but full of delicious flavor. I highly recommend you give this one a try. I’ll be buying a six pack in the not too distant near future. I’m inclined to say that when my kids are older, and I’m still alive, I’ll be dragging my wife to Austria to travel the country and find all the breweries including Stiegl. So far, Austria brewed beers are winning my battle to find the best tasting beers. I envy all those Austrians…hey, wasn’t Arnold Schwarzenegger from Austria? I wonder what he considers his favorite Austrian beer?
Drinkability: Most definitely.
Appearance: Clear, pale golden yellow.
The Buds: Gotta love the purity law.
TBR Cap Rating: 4.75 caps out of 5.

I like the ad - green against the rich red.

Stiegl beer girls servin' it up. Can you handle it?

I'm just a chick drinking beer in a field. Paaaartaaay!

Brau Union's Gosser Euro Pale Lager
The Brewski Report Reviews Gosser Pale Lager
File Date: 4.8.2011
File Name: Another high ranker by type.
The Beer: Gosser
Type: Euro Pale Lager
Serving: Bottle
Stats: 5.2% ABV
Brewer: Brauerei Goss (Brau Union)
Web Site: www.goesser.com
State/Country of Origin: Austria
Brewer Info: Around the year 1000, Countess Adula donated a convent on a piece of farmland on both banks on the, in which - according to ancient tradition - the nuns brewed beer. In 1459 a Pierbrewer by the name of Lenhartt Newmaister appears in a document. The Göss convent was the cultural and economic centre of the area until its abolition in 1782. In 1860 the tradition of brewing beer in the buildings of the convent was revived when beer brewer and entrepreneur Max Kober purchased parts of the convent and reactivated the convents brewery. This is a significant year for Gösser and it still appears in the label today. With the founding of a public limited company in 1893 Max Kober laid the foundation for the development of one Austrias most important breweries. With the developement of the pasteurising process and the use of crown corks in the 1920’s, Gösser also began its conquest of markets outside Austria. While the two world wars meant a fall in production and setbacks for Gösser Brewery the reconstruction of the brewery was a clear sign of the power of Gösser. During the gala dinner for the signing of the Austrian treaty in 1955 Gösser Spezial was served. Reinforced by this impressive symbol, Gössers journey of success has continued until today. The Göss Brewery, the birthplace of Austria’s best beer, is today one of the most modern breweries in the country.
Brewer Brand Hype: Gösser. Good. Better. Gösser. Austria’s finest beer. Purest water from our own carefully protected Alpine springs, the finest ingredients and a beer brewing culture refined over many centuries have made Gösser the best beer in Austria. With every sip of Gösser you are enjoying the finest quality, the purest that nature can offer plus a superb and living beer tradition – altogether a unique taste experience!
Label: Austria’s Finest Beer
The Brewski Review: Good beer. That’s about sums it up. For a Euro pale lager it had minimal hop bitterness and was refreshingly mild tasting. It tasted more like an American Adjunct lager but with richer flavor. This would rank as one of my favorite Euro Pale Lagers to date. Nevertheless, I’ll press on to try others to see if this one holds the torch in the end. Caps off, bottoms up!
Drinkability: Would definitely drink again.
Appearance: Minimal head. Light golden color.
The Buds: Minimal hop bitterness. Smooth.
TBR Cap Rating: 4.25 Caps out of 5.

The Tasmanian Devil.
The Brewski Report Reviews J. Boag & Son’s Premium Lager
File Date: 9.12.10
File Name: Grumpy Gus Dives Deep Within
The Beer: James Boag’s Premium Lager
Type: Euro Pale Ale
Serving: Bottle
Stats: 5.0% ABV
Brewer: J. Boag & Sons Brewing
Web Site: www.boags.com.au
Country of Origin: Australia
Brewer Info: Our history begins in 1881 with the establishment of the Esk Brewery in the remote colonial settlement of Launceston. It was in this brewery that James Boag I and his son James Boag II commenced a tradition of brewing the highest quality beers - and, while they retained the Esk brewery name for some years, ‘Boag’s Brewery’ became a frequent reference. Tasmania’s cool climate and island remoteness offered an abundance of superior quality ingredients for brewing. James Boag quickly realized that these premium ingredients underpinned the brewing of incomparably better beers. After assuming the ownership of Esk brewery in 1883, James Boag and his son were able to combine their appreciation of the finest natural ingredients with the superior equipment of their new brewery to quickly establish their reputation for brewing beers that were far from ordinary. Today, we still insist on using the finest hops, barley, and pure water to produce extraordinary beers. Every bottle reflects the purity and isolation of our island, and James Boag’s commitment to the perfection of the brewer’s craft.
Brewer Brand Hype: James Boag’s Premium Lager is an internationally recognised, multi-award winning premium beer with a rich Tasmanian heritage. Acclaimed both at home and overseas, James Boag’s Premium was honoured with the 2007 Crystal Prestige Award for winning 10 consecutive gold medals at le Monde Selection in Brussels. This success is the result of combining the finest ingredients, world class brewing skills and the distinctive black and white imagery featured in our TV, cinema and print advertising inspired by our photographer Helmut Newton. James Boag’s Premium’s sophisticated style is a perfect match for the smooth, subtle and perfectly balanced characteristics of this world-class lager.

'Who is James Boag?' The Helmut Newton Marketing Campaign. Think it's good? Are You Inspired To Buy The Beer Based On this?
Label: In 1853 James Boag commenced his brewing tradition on the banks of the Esk River in Launceston, Tasmania. We use Tasmania’s finest ingredients combined with extended lagering to create a crisp, pale lager rich in flavour.
The Brewski Review: Grumpy Gus woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. In the middle of the night I awoke and wondered where my life was compared to where I wanted it to be. The trigger was a comment my wife made a few days ago about seeing a former female friend of mine in a grocery store parking lot. There was neither an exchange of words or glances but the tell stuck with me. This woman and her husband both have MBA’s, have great jobs that they love and, of course, the money and ’stuff’ to go along with it. They seems to have it all. As you can imagine this type of thinking is corrosive. The grass is always greener right? Some of you know what I’m talking about. My point is that everyone’s expectation of life should always be more - and I’m not strickly talking monitary rewards. How about purpose? Peace of mind? A well balanced life? An improved body, mind and spirit? You should always strive to be the best. Some days it’s difficult but I try. I hope you do to. And, to improve your taste buds, try picking up a six of this beer - James Boag’s Premium Lager. I was surprised how this beer tasted. Well, I guess I shouldn’t say surprised because I really didn’t have any preconcieved notion as to how it should taste. Maybe I should say…I was pleased with the taste of this beer. There was some nice malt taste and a little hoppy but very well balanced. Very smooth and mild.
Drinkability: Most definitely.
Appearance: Pale golden color.
The Buds: Smoooooooth.

Fins Up Parrotheads! Or, As Jimmy Would say - 'Drink Up! I Need To Fund Another Business Venture.'
The Brewski Report Reviews Margaritaville Brewing’s Landshark Lager
File Date: 9.11.10
File Name: Singing All The Way To The Bank
The Beer: Landshark Lager
Type: American Adjunct Lager
Serving: Bottle
Stats: 4.7% ABV
Brewer: Margaritaville Brewing / Anheuser-Busch
Web Site: www.landsharklager.com
Country / State of Origin: FL, USA
Brewer Info: Since Margaritaville Brewing is only a ‘label’, here is some info on the real brewing company: Anheuser-Busch traces its origins back to the Bavarian brewery, which was established in 1852. Eberhard Anheuser acquired the Bavarian brewery in 1860 and renamed it E. Anheuser & Co. In 1864, his son-in-law, Adolphus Busch, joined the company that would later become Anheuser-Busch. While the company’s early years were demanding, Adolphus Busch proved up to the challenge. His keen vision, bold initiative, marketing savvy and passionate commitment to quality were his legacy to those who followed, and the high standards he established have been adhered to by each succeeding generation. Today, Anheuser-Busch produces the two best-selling beers in the world, Budweiser and Bud Light, and operates 12 breweries in the United States.
Brewer Brand Hype: Fins Up! Land Shark Lager has arrived! Grab a refreshing, thirst quenching island lager and let the “Fin Begin”! Land Shark Lager Premium Quality is brewed by the Margaritaville Brewing Company in Jacksonville Florida. Land Shark Lager is a refreshing, drinkable island lager brewed with a complex blend of hops…giving the beer a distinctive hop note taste.
Label: Premium Quality Island Style Lager. Landshark Lager. Fins Up!
The Brewski Review: What can I say about this? I’m sure to disappoint all the Parrotheads out there but this beer was lacking some serious substance. It didn’t tasted bad, there just wasn’t any taste. If your not aware, this beer is a ‘cooperative project’ between Jimmy Buffet’s ‘Margaritaville Brewing’ label and Anheuser-Busch which started in 2006. A relatively new brand.

The Stadium Deal
In 2009 Jimmy Buffet, et al., convinced Stephen Ross of the Miami Dolphins to change the name of the Dolphin’s stadium to Landshark Stadium. Definitely a marketing ploy but on whose part I don’t know. Mr. Ross should have gotten something out of the deal to make it worth his time. It seems like quite a bit of effort for a little PR stunt. Anheuser-Busch has deep pockets so maybe it sold Landshark Lager to the stadium at cost - giving Mr. Ross a little profit bump. But, after tasting the beer, Anheuser-Busch should be spending big $ to sell this brand.

PR Extroidenaire Buffet With Ross
I like Jimmy Buffet’s songs but I’m not a Parrothead and I won’t be a lemming just because I like his music. Face it, Mr. Buffet is an astute businessman. If he can make a few bucks and it fit’s within his ‘theme’ then I’m sure he’d consider it - and why not. I don’t fault the man. He owns restaurants, casino’s, has played in movies and TV, writes and of course, is a musician. Maybe Jimmy likes the beer. (Remember the Seinfeld episode where Jimmy refers to himself in the third person - ‘Jimmy’s got a compound fracture!’ - classic.) Good for him. I, on the other hand, need a little more taste to make me sing. I have a hard time believing that AB will keep this brand going for an extended period of time. They must be subsidizing the heck out of it to keep it alive. That’s my take.
Drinkability: Nah. Never again.
Appearance: Very pale golden color.
The Buds: Bland. Not much flavor.
TBR Cap Rating: 2.50 out of 5 caps.

Akroyd And The Landshark. Classic SNL. Candygram Anyone? Perhaps This Is The Birthplace Of Buffet's Brand Name?

The Brewski Report Falls off the Train….
File Date: 8.26.10
I’ve been been knocking this marketing campaign around in the back of my noggin for a little while now. I can’t seem to understand the Silver Bullet Train marketing strategy by Coors. A Train? What’s so cool about that? Besides….it’s an ugly chrome monstrosity. I would have thought they could come up with something better. Maybe the Coors Light blimp? Perhaps a plane? Or, how about a party bus….’Rolling it’s way toward you!’ A party bus filled with beer girls stopping at bars from coast to coast. Plant a few cameras on board and hire a mobile camera jockey/bus driver, and it would be a rolling advertising factory - pumping out an endless supply of TV and print stock. Think about it….

The Chrome Monstrosity Is Headed To The Inner City Train Depot No Where Near You. Image of Coors Light's Silver Bullet Train.

Coors Actually Spent Money to Have A Sizeable Reproduction of The 'Silver Bullet Train' Fabricated.

You Can Even Take A Tour Through The 'Train'. Yippee! Can you hear the comments.....'This Thing Better Have A Friggin' Tap On Board.'

And...The Scaled Down Version of The Chrome Monstrosity. Some May Like This Look On Their 'Realistic Looking' Model Train Set.

I think This Is Cooler And More Realistic Than The Chrome. That Is, If Your A Coors Light Model Railroading Fanatic.

This Is What I'm Talking About! They Have 'The Bus', Now, Just Fill It With Some Beer........

.....And Some Girls (Maybe Even A Dude or Two - I Wouldn't Want To Appear Sexist). Presto. A Marketing Campaign The Average Male And Female Drinker Can Relate To.

Sam Adams launched a new pint glass to further enjoy their beer. This is great marketing. Convincing the beer buying public (or at least the Sam Adamsphiles) that they truely can’t enjoy or taste the full flavor unless they purchase a special glass? Genius! All the beer snobs will want to buy one post haste to show that they are dialed in. Does it really work? Unfortunately, I’m not one who really cares. The glass I use works just fine for me to determine if I like the beer or not.

Hullabaloo Marketing or Science Backed Drinkware Innovation?

Here are a few vintage bud advertisements that make you wish for simpler times. I was just a glimmer in my mother’s eye when these ads saw their debut, but it still makes me yearn for a time before cell phones, cable news, wi-fi, rap music, bad 80’s hairstyles and celebrities who aren’t. Ahhhh!

Aren't you glad? Springtime is a happy time. And the best place to be is close to a bud. Cold, refreshing Budweiser....the King of Beers.

KNOW HIM! He's the easiest man in town to meet. Just visit your friendly tavern and ask for Budweiser....King of Beers.
I penned a post on 7.29.10 for Killians Irish Red that notes what my bartender would look like if I owned my own place. This smartly dressed man is what I pictured. Not a punk with a nose/ear/belly ring in a graphic tee shirt advertising his favorite band. Oh yeah, I dig that vintage light behind him as well.

Does anyone remember paying $0.25 for a beer? This would be a great vintage sign to have. Although, the only place my wife would allow me to hang it would probably be the garage or basement.
