Plenty O' Fish Head On This Beer

Plenty O' Fish Head On This Beer

The Brewski Report on Dogfish Head’s Aprihop India Pale Ale.
File Date: 6.20.10

File Name: Dogfish Brings Their B Game
The Beer: India Pale Ale
Type: American IPA
Serving: Bottle
Stats: 7.0% ABV
Brewer: Dogfish Head Craft Brewery
Web Site: http://www.dogfish.com
Country of Origin: DE, USA
Brewer Info: The story of Dogfish Head began in June of 1995 when we opened Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats, the first state’s first brewpub opened in the resort beach community of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The plan was to bring original beer, original food, and original music to the area. With the popularity of the pub growing, it was quickly apparent that the 12–gallon brewery would not keep up with demand. We built a new brewery and underwent a thirty-fold expansion of the brew house! We outgrew our distributing brewery in a couple years and in the summer of 2002; we moved our entire production brewery up the road to Milton, Delaware into a 100,000 square foot converted cannery. Around the same time (just to keep thing interesting), we built a distillery on the second floor of our Rehoboth Beach brewpub, so we could make vodka, rum and gin.

Brewer Brand Hype: Aprihop is our fruit beer for hopheads! It is antbr-aprihop-logo1 American IPA brewed with Pilsner and Cystal malts massively hopped in in the continuous fashion. The flavor is complimented by the addition of Apricots. After fermentation the beer is dry hopped with irresponsible amounts of Amarillo hops. The beer is hoppy in the aroma with the apricots playing a supporting complimentary role. The flavor is rich with late hop flavors and it’s bitterness is tempered by just the right amount of malt sweetness and fruity undertones from the apricots. This is one of our most popular seasonal beers and we’ve been brewing it each spring for quite a while now. We release the beer each March and you should find it on the shelves through May.
Label: A Serious India Pale Ale Brewed With Real Apricots.

The Brewski Review: I thought this would be a winner when I pulled it off the shelf. I like apricot jam so why not beer? Would the flavor blow me away? As the beer rolled across my tongue I sensed a little sweetness and a faint apricot taste but nothing that rang my bells. Overall this was a decent IPA but when it billed itself as a ’serious India Pale Ale brewed with real apricots’ it elevated the game. On this one I don’t think Dogfish Head Brewery bought their skillsets to the court. As noted, it’s a decent beverage but I don’t see the ‘Apricot’ adding much. It reminds me of Abita’s Strawberry beer - It’s probably in the beer, but the taste isn’t coming across like you would expect - you know, since it’s advertised. That is, at least not for my buds.  Maybe you’ll have different feedback. So, I most certainly won’t discourage you from at least trying it if you like apricots.

Drinkability: Will try some other IPA before drinking Aprihop again.
Appearance: Medium amber in color.
The Buds: Slight presence of apricot flavor.
TBR Cap Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Greene King’s Old Speckled Hen English Pale Ale Beer Review 12.30.09

The Beer Named After a Car - Moreland's Old Speckled Hen.

The Beer Named After a Car - Moreland's Old Speckled Hen.

The Brewski Report Reviews Greene King’s Old Speckled Hen and the President’s Popularity Slide.
File Date: 12.30.09

File Name:  A New Paint Job Doesn’t Make Something New Again.
The Beer: Old Speckled Hen
Type: English Pale Ale
Serving: Clear Bottle
Stats: 5.2% ABV
Brewer:  Greene King / Moreland Brewery
Country of Origin: UK (England)
Brewer Info: Morland was a brewery in Abingdon in the English county of Oxfordshire (formerly Berkshire). They first brewed in West Ilsley in 1711. It was purchased and closed by Greene King in 2000; and production of the Morland beers was moved to their brewery in Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk.

Greene King has operated pubs and brewing for over 200 years. Combining successful traditional ale brands with modern forward thinking, Greene King has grown steadily from its base in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk to become a leading pub retailer and brewer.  Greene King brews all of its beers in Bury St Edmunds, where ale has been a feature of life since at least as far back as 1086. But we’ve taken the traditional art of brewing to new heights, producing what is arguably the finest range of cask ales in the country. Our beers are as much at home in city centre nightspots as they are in the cosy lounge of the village pub; we’ve taken the traditional craft of brewing and turned it into an art form. No other UK brewer is as committed to cask ale.

greene-king-tavern-plaque1Brewer Brand Hype: “Old Speckled Hen” was first brewed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the MG car factory in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. Named after an old MG car which was used as the factory run around, they would park the old MG Featherweight Fabric Saloon outside the paint shop where it would normally get spattered in paint and so it became known as the ‘Owld Speckl’d Un’. This turned into “Old Speckled Hen” when the beer was unveiled. Since then the finely balanced beer with a distinctive rich malty taste and fruity aroma has attracted many fans, including the fox, who is always on the hunt for his Hen.

The Run-Around Car That Spawned the Name....

Label:  Named after an unusual speckled vintage MG car, Old Speckled Hen is a Pale Ale which owes it’s distinctive character and dry taste to a unique strain of yeast first used in 1896.  The complex flavour reflects skills developed across more than 280 years of independent brewing history.

The Brewski Review:  Here is an interesting, yet unqualified factoid I heard the other day: President Obama’s popularity has been declining due to FOX News’ use of attractive women commentators.  I found this comment to be rather interesting.  Now, I’m not sure if the gentleman who made the statement actually believed  what he said or if he was searching for any ammunition he could fire in a conversation he was quickly loosing regarding the correlation of the rise of FOX News and the freefall of the President’s popularity.  FOX News, as you may know, has been trouncing all the other news media outlets of late.  I have watched FOX News and yes, there are attractive women commentators on the show.  I will also agree that guys are visual creatures and wanting to watch attractive women wouldn’t be a big stretch.  But, a guy being swayed to switch his political affiliation while watching and listening to attractive women IS a stretch.  Either he’s of weak constitution or the women are VERY convincing.  That said, I do see a correlation: there is a rising discontent to what’s been happening in the country lately and those concerned individuals would rather opt to gather information from an outlet that doesn’t lean to the left.  FOX News isn’t accelerating the President’s popularity slide.  That blame rests squarely on the President and those decision makers he elected to surround himself with.  Speaking of FOX, the mascot for Moreland’s Old Speckled Hen is in fact a fox.  Their ads promo a fox in search of the ‘Hen’.  Ironic isn’t it.  I thought so.  Overall, the beer was average.  Poured with a nice head and maintained a nice amber color.  Taste was mildly bitter but not too much.  The ‘Hen’ didn’t grab my taste buds and surely didn’t leave them screaming for more.

Drinkability: Offered a choice, I’d probably try something else.
Appearance: Medium amber in color.
The Buds:  Crisp taste with medium bitterness.

Negra Modelo Review 6.20.09

TBR Reviews Grupo Modelo's Munich Dunkel Lager AKA Negra Modelo.

TBR Reviews Grupo Modelo's Munich Dunkel Lager AKA Negra Modelo.

The Brewski Report Calls Out Negra Modelo and the Frustration with Crack.
File Date: June 20, 2009

File Name: Repairing the Walls of Shame
The Beer: Negra Modelo
Type: Munich Dunkel Lager
Serving: Short, dark bottle
Stats: 5.4% abv, 0 grams of fat, 170 calories per 12-oz bottle
Brewer: Grupo Modelo
Brewer Specs:  First brewed in Mexico by Austrian immigrants. It was first sold on draft in 1926, but was first produced in 1925. Negra Modelo comes in an unusually shaped, wide brown bottle with a trademark Gold Label. Grupo Modelo has marketshare of 56% in Mexico. Until the 60’s Grupo Modelo used red poppy flowers in its advertising, where almost any image it used had poppy flowers somewhere in the image.

Chocolaty Goodness? You be the judge.

Chocolaty Goodness? You be the judge.

Brewer Hype:  Negra Modelo redefines the way consumers think of a dark beer because in taste and color it is a very drinkable beer. Negra Modelo appeals to import beer drinkers who are looking for something new and different. Consumers who drink craft beers also love Negra Modelo as it offers more flavor, more complexity and a little “mystery.” To achieve its unique taste, Negra Modelo uses a greater quantity of malt, the finest hops, a special yeast and the purest water. It is a delicious, creamy, full-flavored dark brew with a pleasant malt aroma and dry hop flavor that has a smooth mellow taste.

The Brewski Review: In a quest to rejuvenate my house I find myself torn between doing the best job I can and the time I have to commit. Take the den for instance. It’s currently the room de jour for my efforts. The plaster walls have cracks, some larger than others. The larger cracks were addressed by cleaning out the crevice, filling with plaster and top coating with a light joint compound for easy sanding. The smaller hairline cracks and other surface imperfections are numerous, distracting and annoying. I could paint over the hairline cracks but the plaster surface, as a whole, is riddled with imperfections. This is where I’m torn - spend time to skim coat the entire wall for a reasonably attractive surface or let it go ‘as-is’ and chalk it up as ‘original’ to the house. What I’d ultimately like to do is tear it all down and hang rock but that won’t happen given my finances and available time. Your right, it’s not life or death. But it’s a mentally perplexing dilemma that frustrates me to no end. My advice to you? Tear it all out and do it right - before you move into the house. You want some more of this mind blowing wisdom? Never eat a handful of M&M’s before you review a beer. I did that the other day. I usually need a quick snack when I get home from work and it was handy. Did it subjectively slant my taste? I don’t think so. This beer had enough chocolate taste to hold it’s own. It poured with a tight, nicely formed head but it didn’t linger very long.  It wasn’t very bitter and it went down smooth. Overall it’s a good beer but I think I’d be inclined to try another Munich Dunkel Lager before cracking open a Negra Modelo.

Drinkability: Yes.
Appearance: Nice, tight head on top of a dark beer.
The Buds: As far as my limited exposure to Munich Dunkels go, I thought it was a decent beverage.

Modelo Especial Beer Review 4.26.09

The Brewski Bottom Line: Three out of Five Crowns

TBR Cap Rating: 3.5 caps out of 5.

The Brewski Report’s Modelo Especial Beer Review.
File Date:  April 26, 2009

File Name:  ‘Where’s My Economic Stimulus Package?’
The Beer: Modelo Especial
Type:  Pilsner (American Adjunct Lager)
Serving: Short, Clear Bottle
Stats:  4.4% ABV

Brewer: Grupo Modelo

Web Site: www.grupomodelo.com
Brewer Info:  Modelo Especial has been brewed and packaged in Mexico by Grupo Modelo since 1925 and became available in the U.S. in 1990. Grupo Modelo is Mexico’s largest brewer, operating seven state-of-the-art breweries throughout Mexico.

Brewer Brand Hype:  ‘A rich, full-flavored pilsner beer with a slightly sweet, well-balanced taste, light hop character and crisp finish.’

The Brewski Review:  I really needed a cold one this weekend.   So I reached into the fridge and pulled out a Modelo Especial hoping this would help ease the pain a bit.  Not physical pain, but fiscal pain.  Yes.  Fiscal.  We’re not talking about the economic meltdown the nation has recently experienced but rather an unfortunate turn of events affecting my domicile.  Here’s what happened….I just get done mowing the yard – first of the season.  (Aside from the fact that pushing a mower across my yard is an invitation to a broken ankle, I don’t really mind performing this chore.  It’s a mindless task you need every now and then.)  Anyway, after I push the mower back to the garage I pause next to a large pine tree – maybe 40’ tall - that stands next to the garage.  I don’t know why I paused but I did.  I look up and see the aluminum fascia on the rake is all smashed up.  ‘What the…’ I think to myself.  The garage must be hitting this frickin’ tree (paying attention?). My eyes start to follow the trunk down to the ground.  About the time I reach the bottom my wife walks up while holding our son. Hmm.  ‘The bark has cracks in it’ I say to my

wife.  As we’re standing there looking a moderate gust of wind kicks up, the cracks widen, the ground heaves up and the tree sways toward the building.  Yikes!  Ours eyes widen and we both step back.  Scientifically explained: Splits in tree trunk bad.  Strong winds bad.  Two bad things don’t equal a good thing.  Nevertheless, I spent the next 2 hrs calling tree service companies on a Saturday afternoon to come out and remove the garage killer before it finishes the job.  This cost me some major greenbacks.  Not happy about it.  And, the beer didn’t seem to make me feel any better.

Drinkability:  Somewhat.
Appearance:  Golden Yellow in color.  Pours with a nice head.  Looks good in a glass.
The Buds:  Seemed to be very carbonated.  Light and crisp just like the hype.  But I don’t agree with the slightly sweet, well-balanced taste and light hop character spiel.
TBR Cap Rating: 3.5 out of 5. I’d drink it again if I was in Mexico and there wasn’t much else to drink.
