Brewer Info: RJ Rockers Brewing Company became Spartanburg’s first brewery in 1997, when owner and brewer Mark Johnsen set out on a mission to provide the people of the Upstate with the best microbrewed beer they had ever tasted. Mark, a New Jersey native, had loved brewing beer for his friends and family for years.
Following his service in the 1991 Gulf War, Mark was stationed in Germany as a member of the United States armed forces, and he took this opportunity to learn as much as possible about brewing from the experts. By the time he was honorably discharged from the service, he was ready to take his beer to the public.

Label: This unfiltered American Wheat Ale made with real Carolina peaches has a real attitude problem. Call him ‘sweet’ and he flips his lid. Most would take offense if he wasn’t so darn tasty. Go ahead, savor the anger.

The Brewski Review: I think the brewer’s assement of the taste is spot on. Overwhelming aroma of peaches fills the olafactory senses upon the initial pour. The taste, as noted, only needs the fuzz on the skin to be a more fruit-like. This is definitely a keeper if you like your beer with a little fruit flavor. Some of the hard core beer drinkers probably wouldn’t be caught dead drinking this. But, what do I care? I like what I like. As I’ve noted in my ‘about’ page, I’m on a quest to find the best taste of each beer type. This one is tops in the peach field. Give one a try. I think you’ll be as impressed as I was. I drank this after mowing on a cool fall day – maybe low 60’s – but I think it would be rockin’ on a hot summer day.

Drinkability: Excellent. Would drink again.
Appearance: Drank it down to fast before I noted the color.
The Buds: Wonderful peach flavor

Brewer Info: In the beginning…It all started on a sunny day on October 5th, 1983. We’d love to say that it was one of the most memorable days of founder, Ken Brooker’s life, but that night he hosted one of his legendary tasting sessions and he can’t remember much about it. In the years that follow, Ken continues to brew beers in his shed and host his friends. Word spreads and his friends begin to bring along their friends and their friends’ friends, until eventually Tuesday nights at Ken’s attracts up to 40 people! In return for being one of the lucky few to sample his early creations, Ken insists that his guests fill out tasting notes.

Brewer Brand Hype: Old Engine Oil is a remarkably smooth, creamy brew with a beautiful velvety mouthfeel. Enjoy flavours of coffee, slightly buttered toffee, dark chocolate and earthy hops. You may find some mild cherry fruit within the residual sweetness, neatly accompanying the roasted flavours that ride with you all the way to the finish.tbr-old-oil-insert
Label: Brewed in small batches. Viscous. Chocolatey. Roasty. Harviestoun’s original master brewer Ken Brooker spent much of his early life crafting wooden prototypes for the Ford Motor Company. This black, viscous ale reminded Ken of thick, goopy car engine oil, so he named it in honor of his second love, the internal combustion engine. It’s thick, chocolatey flavor leaves a roasty, bittersweet aftertaste to savor.

The Brewski Review: This beer reminds me of our need to purchase a new car. My wife needs to trade up from a small Mazda to a vehicle more suitable for growing children. I’ve been telling her to get a small SUV. She’s been looking at the Ford Excape, Mazda CX-5, Subaru Forrester and the Toyota Rav4 amont others. We both want all the bells and whistles but on our mac & cheese budget, it’s not in the cards; maybe a ‘newer’ one that’s two or three years old. She’ll get the car, of course, since she has the kids most of the time, and I’ll get her old car which will be my new ‘go to work’ car. My Ford Exploder will most likely get turned in as a trade: it has 170K miles and mechanical issues are popping up routinely. I could sell it outright but there’s the hassle factor: it’s not worth my time. I’ll trade it in when I find that big SUV that fit’s my pleasure (Suburban. Used; of course). If we can make this all work out soon, I’ll have to pop open one of these porters. The color is certainly consistent with old engine oil – minus the grit of course. It pours with a beautiful mud colored head that dissipates rather quickly and leaving lace on the side of the glass. I don’t really think it’s ‘thick’ or ‘viscous’ but it does have an oily mouth feel. The malts pop and linger all the way through to the aftertaste. It’s definitely a delicious porter that’s worth a try.

Drinkability: Delicious. Most definitely.
Appearance: Black on the pour with a nice mud colored head.
The Buds: Great roasted malt taste all the way through.

Brewer Info: Brooklyn Brewery was started in 1987 by former Associated Press correspondent Steve Hindy and former Chemical Bank lending officer Tom Potter. Hindy learned to brew beer during a six year stay in various Middle Eastern nations such as Saudi Arabia and Syria, where possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages were forbidden. Upon his return to his home in Brooklyn in 1984, he and Potter, his downstairs neighbor, quit their jobs and founded the brewery.  Originally all their beer was brewed by contract by Matt Brewing Company, and the pair started their own distribution company and personally transported and marketed their beer to bars and retailers around New York City. Later, they acquired a former matzo ball factory in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and converted it into a functional brewery. Although the brewery is looking to expand its brewing capacity in the City, at present most of the production, including all Brooklyn Lager and all bottled products, are brewed by contract in the upstate New York city of Utica, due to the limited ability to meet demand at the Williamsburg brewery, its lack of a bottling line, and the cost benefits of contract brewing.

bb-logo-revBrewer Brand Hype: When the days grow short and the beach recedes into our dreams, we need a very nice beer to get us through the long winter.  Based on the satisfying malty ales of blustery Scotland, Brooklyn Winter Ale will have you looking on the bright side of things.  Rich Scottish malts bring deep bready flavors to a beer with a full copper color, a round, smooth palete and brisk hopping that pulls the sweet malt into balance.  See – things are looking up already.

Label: We brew Brooklyn Winter Ale from heirloom Maris Otter malts to create a beer with roots in blustery Scotland.  Brooklyn Winter Ale is richly malty, aromatic, full-bodied and perfect with stews, roasts and holiday dishes.

The Brewski Review:  What you may notice about this post is the lack of my ubiquitous bottle and glass photo at the top of the post.  I had just come back from the store to purchase deer netting and this bottle fell out of the back of my aging, large carbon footprint SUV.  Amazingly, the bottle didn’t break.  But, the cap became damaged and it started to spew it’s contents all over my frozen driveway.  I went inside to get a bottle opener where I told my wife what had happened.  She immediately thought it was some lame excuse to have a beer.  ‘No.  Really.’ I told here.  I’m not sure if she believed me or not but I drank it nonetheless.  I did this outdoors in the cold, blustery winter while I wrapped a few arborvitae around my house.  It did a nice job keeping my warm while I looked like a complete fool trying to unwrap the nearly invisible deer netting.  We had a record snowfall last winter and my normally safe trees in my backyard were attacked by throngs of deer who had to forage for new feeding grounds.  Take a look at what was once full, bushy trees.  This year, I thought, the deer will have to work for their grub.  No freebie meals on my dime.  Maybe I’ll ask Santa to bring me a high powered paint gun for Christmas.  Bonus: I could use it to track the coons who have the unnatural ability to open the same garbage cans I have a problem with when I use both my opposing thumbs.

Appearance: Couldn’t tell on this one. Straight from the bottle to my mouth.
The Buds:  Good.  Smooth, mild taste.
