Brewer Info: Frankenmuth’s founding fathers brought the tradition of brewing to the mid-Michigan forests in 1845. John Matthias Falliers founded Frankenmuth’ first brewery in 1857. Cousins William Knaust and Martin Heubisch opened the Cass River Brewery just north of the Fallier property in 1862, where the Frankenmuth Brewery continues to stand today. The Cass River Brewery was purchases by Johann Geyer in 1874 and renamed Geyer’s Brothers Brewing Co. For the next 112 years, the facility operated under many names including the Frankenmuth Brewing Co.

The Brewski Review: When is not a better time to be indoors, than in the winter drinking a nice bock beer and watching zombie shows. The Walking Dead was playing reruns all day long today. AND, the wife took the kids to her sisters house. Why not take advantage of this? The Dead marathon was a precursor to the season premire tonight at 9pm. Can’t wait. The reason I like the thought of a world overrun by zombies is that it levels the playing field. That high flying, ego driven CEO would be down in the trenches with the guy who actually dug the trench. No amount of money would serve you well at this point because money would have no value. It’s those that prepare for such adversities that would come out on top. Of course, I’m no where near being prepared for anything. We have enough food and water to last about a week. I’ve been meaning to get around to purchasing more foodstuffs but it always takes a back seat to every other bill that shows up in the mail. But in reality, it wouldn’t be zombies. It’ll be a major power outage, severe winter storm, financial collapse, solar flare or any other Doomsday Prepper reason for stockpiling goods. I don’t think these people are kooks. I think everyone should have enough to get them by at least a couple weeks should some life threatening adversity befall them. The government can’t be there for everyone all at once.

Drinkability: Excellent. Would drink again

The Brewski Review: Frankly, I was dissapointed with this one.  I had just finished shoveling a ton and a half of river rock out of a pickup and mowing the lawn on a sunny 83 degree day.  All I wanted was to taste a nice beer and relax for a few minutes before embarking on another small project of removing the deer netting I installed on some trees last fall.  The beer was cold and crisp so I guess in this respect it was good (thanks, in part, to my fridge) but I was looking for a nice strawberry taste.  Aside from not tasting strawberry, I couldn’t even smell it.  Now, I did burn the tip of my tongue last weekend in a freak pizza incident (I was hungry and the pizza was, unknowingly, right out of the oven.) so there is a small chance that it dulled my taste buds.  But, hey, I didn’t burn my nose.  I drank another Bud Lime the other night (I was on the road traveling for business again and it sounded good) and I had no problems with my taste or scent capabilities then.  Many people rave about this brew but I think Abita needs to refine this recipe a little and make it more like the beer they market it to be.   

Drinkability: Drinkable.  But not as a ‘Strawberry’ flavored beer.
Appearance: Large, quick foamy head over top of a light golden color.
The Buds: An the good side, cold and crisp.  No strawberry taste.
TBR Cap Rating: 3.0 out of 5 just because it isn’t the beer Abita markets it to be.

Brewer Info:  The first Red Stripe was brewed in the Surrey Brewery in 1928 as an ale style beer that was too heavy to suit local preferences. The current lager formulation was first produced in 1938 from a recipe developed by Paul H. Cotter (the son of founder E. P. Cotter) and Bill Martindale. The modern brewery was opened at Hunt’s Bay in 1958.

Brewer Brand Hype:  Red Stripe’s superior taste is created with the finest quality Hops from the Yakima Valley in the USA, choice European Malt, water from the Liguanea alluvium aquifer, superbly brewed with care.  It’s moderate in body, bitterness, hop aroma and flavor, has a low butterscotch flavor, full bodied and has a smooth post palate sensation.

The Brewski Review:  Being that it was Mother’s Day, I thought it would be nice to cook dinner.  The notion that my wife actually asked me before this thought entered my mind probably had some minor bearing on the final outcome.  But, nonetheless, I took on the project.  First things first, so off to the store we go: filet mignon, mustard based potato salad, asparagus, mushrooms, onion and mozzarella ball and tomato salad.  To me, this is a guy can-do dinner because the only stovetop cooking was to sauté the mushrooms and onions. Cut ‘em up and toss ‘em in butter.  Move ‘em around every now and then and pretty soon their done.  Walla!  I was originally going to grill them but my wife wanted them caramelized, not burnt.  So I acquiesced.  The filets and asparagus go on the man-grill.  I also considered corn on the cob but it was a little early in the season for sweet corn in our neck of the woods.  I also decided to invite my parents.  Its rate that we invite my parents over (although, it even rarer that I cook).  It’s not that they live too far away.  Heck, they just live maybe ¾ mile down the road.  Maybe it’s our frantic kid schedule that drives our dinner routine.  Or, maybe it’s because the house is in a perpetual state of ‘remodel’ – clutter stacked up everywhere.  I know it shouldn’t matter but I take pride in keeping a neat and organized mess.  Perhaps the winds of change are upon us: I purchased a large salmon filet not too long ago and that may just be the reason to get them back over for another meal.  I’ll try grilling that as well.  A little butter for flavor (I’m on a low salt diet) and, of course, a beer by my side while I try to figure out if the fish is cooked on the inside.  As today, I think that time would be worthy of a Red Stripe as well.

Drinkability:  Ya mon.  I be drinking this beer again.
Appearance:  Golden color.  Pours with a nice head.
The Buds:  Sweet tasting mild beer.
