Dogfish Head’s Pumpkin Ale Just Won’t Cut It For This Frustrated American
File Date: 10.8.2011

File Name: The struggles of being underwater.
The Beer: Pumpkin Ale
Type: Pumpkin Ale
Serving: Bottle
Stats: 7.0% ABV
Brewer: Dogfish Head Craft Brewery
Web Site: www.dogfish.com
State/Country of Origin: DE, USA
Brewer Info: The story of Dogfish Head began in June of 1995 when we opened Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats, the first state’s first brewpub opened in the resort beach community of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. The plan was to bring original beer, original food, and original music to the area. With the popularity of the pub growing, it was quickly apparent that the 12–gallon brewery would not keep up with demand. We built a new brewery and underwent a thirty-fold expansion of the brew house! We outgrew our distributing brewery in a couple years and in the summer of 2002; we moved our entire production brewery up the road to Milton, Delaware into a 100,000 square foot converted cannery. Around the same time (just to keep thing interesting), we built a distillery on the second floor of our Rehoboth Beach brewpub, so we could make vodka, rum and gin.

tbr-dh-pumpkin-insertBrewer Brand Hype: A full-bodied brown ale with smooth hints of pumpkin and brown sugar. We brew our Punkin Ale with pumpkin meat, organic brown sugar and spices. This is the perfect beer to warm-up with, as the season cools. Punkin Ale is named after a locally-famous and seriously off-centered event here in southern Delaware - Punkin Chunkin (check out some of these Discovery Channel videos of Punkin Chunkin, you gotta see it to believe it!). In fact, Punkin Ale made it’s debut as it claimed First Prize in the 1994 Punkin Chunkin Recipe Conest - yes, that was a full 6 months before we even opened our doors for business. Punkin Chunkin has grown in size and scale with pumpkins now being hurled more than 4,000 feet through the air! If you come down to see if for yourself - come by and visit us. Since then, we’ve brewed Punkin Ale each and every fall. It is released right around September first each year. When you find it, grab some extra because it’s usually gone by Thanksgiving.
Label: A full bodied brown ale brewed with real pumpkin, brown suger, allspice, cinnamon & nutmeg.

The Brewski Review: I’m not ranking this pumpkin ale high on my list of favorite pumpkin ales. It has a gorgeous copper color and pours with a sumptuous head but it doesn’t have that pumpkin pie flavor I’m looking for. Others may not care for the pumpkin pie flavor but, to me, that’s what these beers are all about. This one just didn’t do it for me. The allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg weren’t as bold as I would have liked them to be. But then, of course, there are many things that aren’t as good as I’d want them to be. Take, for example, my finances: I don’t have nearly as much as I’d like. In reality, it’s less than ‘nearly as much’ and closer to ‘I drive a 15 year old car and can’t afford to upgrade because I’m under water on my mortgage’. But wait, it’s even worse than that! This taxpayer could save thousands if we refinanced our house, which we can’t do, because as you may have guessed, we’re under water on our mortgage! So, like so many of you out there, we struggle to get buy each and every day. Drinking an occasional beer is just a small reward that keeps me hanging on - day in and day out. And, by golly, if I want pumpkin pie flavor, dang it, I won’t settle for anything less!

Drinkability: Probably not. Would seek out another pumpkin ale.
Appearance: Visually appealing.
The Buds: Not very pumpkin pie-ish.
TBR Cap Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Weyerbacher’s Imperial Pumpkin Ale Beer Review 10.31.10

Sunday, October 31st, 2010

Yes. I'm reviewing another pumpkin ale.

Yes. I'm reviewing another pumpkin ale.

The Brewski Report Reviews Weyerbacher’s Imperial Pumpkin Ale.
File Date: 10.31.10

File Name: Your Vote Matters (As Long As You Vote For Change).
The Beer: Imperial Pumpkin Ale
Type: Pumpkin Ale
Serving: Bottle
Stats: 8.0%
Brewer: Weyerbacher Brewing Co.
Web Site: www.weyerbacher.com
Country/State of Origin: PA, USA
Brewer Info: Weyerbacher Brewing Company was founded in 1995 by Dan and Sue Weirback. In the beginning, I was an avid homebrewer and big fan of the blossoming new craft beers that were hitting the market.  One weekend in late 1993 while vacationing in Vermont, Sue and I toured the Long Trail brewery, back when it was in the basement of an old mill.  I was looking for a new business to get into but it was Sue who suggested we start thinking about starting our own brewery. Nearly two years later, Weyerbacher Brewing Company was born in a livery stable in downtown Easton, PA.  Launched in August of 1995, the original concept was to make some mainstream microbrews, like a Pale Ale and ESB. Boy did we take a wrong turn!  In 1997 we brewed our first big beer, Raspberry Imperial Stout, which happened to be one of Dan’s favorite homebrew recipes.  As hard as it was to get people to care about another “Pale Ale” in a sea of pale ales, people seemed to stand up and take notice of Raspberry Imperial Stout.  The following year we brewed Blithering Idiot Barleywine and began brewing Belgian beers as well, like our Merry Monks’ Ale (originally called “Belgian Style Tripel”).  This was the time when our path was set.  “Let’s make full-flavored high-quality brews for a discerning customer.”  We haven’t looked back.

tbr-weyerbacher-neonBrewer Brand Hype: Like a pyramid for a pharaoh, we set out to make a bold monument for The King of the Pumpkins!  This 8.0% ABV pumpkin ale is the mother of all pumpkin ales.  It is heartier, spicier, and more “caramelly” and “pumpkiny” than its faint brethren! We have added lots of pumpkin along with Cinnamon, Nutmeg and a touch of cardamom and clove giving this beer a spicy, full-bodied flavor.  This truly is an Imperial Pumpkin Ale. Perfect finisher on a cool autumn night, or match it up with a slice of pumpkin pie and fresh whipped cream.  It is available August through November.
Label: Ale brewed with Pumpkin and Spices, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Cardamom & Cloves.

The Brewski Review: Election day is around the corner. If your for change and want to make a statment, get out there and vote conservative. We need a smaller, more nimble and accountable government. We don’t need higher taxes, more government intrusion & bureaucracy, elitist mindsets and dubious representation.  If your sticking with the current G-plan, you can stay home on the couch, waiting for someone to come and take care of you.  While you sit on the couch, or recliner, perhaps you should try an Imperial Pumpkin Ale. Just because we have a different political viewpoint it doesn’t mean that I can’t turn you on to a tasty beer. Anyway, 8% alcohol by volume it says on the label. It certainly didn’t seem like it. I drank this one on an empty stomach right before a dinner of grilled hamburgers and french fries. I though it was a very tasty pumpkin ale, just a little bit better than my last review of Saranac’s Pumpkin Ale. The spicy flavor comes through immediately but it doesn’t have that ultimate pumpkin pie flavor of which I am in search of. It’s close, but I think there may be better out there so I’ll keep drinking until I can find it.

Drinkability: Definitely.
Appearance: Medium brownish/amber in color
The Buds: Tasty pumpkin and spice. Not quite like pumpkin pie though.
TBR Cap Rating: 4.25 caps out of 5

The Brewery sure isn't pleasing on the eye but at least the beer tastes good.

The Brewery is nothing to look at but at least the beer tastes good.

Buffalo Bill’s Pumpkin Ale Beer Review 9.20.09

Buffalo Bill's Seasonal Pumpkin Ale Beer

Buffalo Bill's Seasonal Pumpkin Ale Beer

The Brewski Report Reviews Buffalo Bill’s Pumpkin Ale.
File Date: 9.20.09

File Name:  Carve Out A Place For Buffalo Bill’s Pumpkin Ale
The Beer:  Pumpkin Ale
Type:  Pumpkin Ale
Serving:  Bottle
Stats: 5.2% ABV
Brewer: Buffalo Bill’s Brewery
Country of Origin:  Hayward, CA USA
Brewer Info:  In the early 1980s, beer enthusiast and famed photojournalist Bill Owens envisioned opening an authentic brew pub similar to those that existed in England. It would serve up homemade, hearty libations with character and integrity. At the time, California law prevented the joint operation of a brewery and pub, and true beer lovers had few alternatives to watery, mass produced beers, unless they could figure out how to make their own homebrew.  But the law changed in early 1983, giving brew pubs the green light to draft their own beer on the premises. Owens, a pioneer in the early brewpub movement, poured himself into making his dream a reality, and opened Buffalo Bill’s Brewery in Hayward California. It would be the second oldest brewpub in the country (the first had opened just a couple of weeks earlier), and the oldest in the Bay Area.  Today, Buffalo Bill’s stands as a shrine to microbrew lovers worldwide, and a gem of Hayward’s local entertainment scene. This year, we toast to 25 years on the microbrew frontier, quenching the thirst and soothing the souls of those who truly appreciate great beer.

buffalo-bill-pumpkin-labelBrewer Brand Hype:  Buffalo Bill’s Pumpkin Ale is the most sought after seasonal beer.  It is believed that George Washington brewed beer using this bright orange squash.  In modern times, Buffalo Bill’s ‘Pumpkin Ale’ is a true original microbrew that uses baked and roasted pumpkins.  Cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg are added to create what has been described as, “pumpkin pie in a bottle”.

Label:  Ale Brewed with Real Pumpkin and Natural Spice Flavor.

The Brewski Review: If I haven’t written it before, I’ll state it now: I love fall.  This year it came faster which makes me wonder if we’ll skip right through fall and head into winter, which I don’t really care for.  But fall is cozy to me.  It’s great to have an outdoor fire in the fall.  Smoke is in the air.  Leaves crunch under every step and the crisp air is refreshing.  And who doesn’t like Thanksgiving?  All the food and drinks?  Yum.  Nothing like laying on the couch with a full belly and the only ambition you have it to try and get up to eat more.  That what was driving my desire to find my perfect fall beer.  Buffalo Bill’s Pumpkin Ale comes close.  It’s tasty, just like a pumpkin pie.  I’ve read other reviews on it and many don’t have good things to say.  I disagree.  Perhaps there are better versions of Pumpkin Ale available but this one is pretty darn good.  It’s the closest taste to fall I’ve had so far.

Drinkability:  Goes down smooth.  No aftertaste.  Not bitter.
Appearance:  Dark golden in color.  Almost an amber color.
The Buds:  It does taste like pumpkin pie.  Yum.
TBR Cap Rating: 4.25 out of 5.
