The Brewski Review: Did I tell mention that my wife picked up a six pack of IPA for me a few weeks ago. She hunted and pecked until she thought she found the perfect set. Little did she know she stuffed an American Pale Ale in with the IPA’s. Stevens Point Cascade Pale Ale is that APA. I can say that I liked it a little better than the IPA’s I’ve been downing lately. This one has the hoppy bitterness but not as much as there seems to be with an IPA. For that reason, I could drink a six pack of this brand. It was cold and crisp and went down fast. Try some Stevens Point APA yourself and let me know what you think.
Drinkability: Yes. Would drink again.
Appearance: Light golden color. Quick dissolving head.
The Buds: Good. Hoppy but not as bitter as an IPA.

Brewer Info: In his travels across Europe, beer-lover John Hall had enjoyed a distinctive local brew in each region he visited. Hall was convinced that Midwesterners could produce beers as good or better than those he’d tasted in his travels. Living on the shore of the largest system of fresh water on the planet Earth, in a city with rapidly evolving tastes – John decided that his hometown, Chicago, would be the ideal place to do just that. The key to building interest in craft beer, Hall decided, was to allow consumers to watch the brewing process – while providing them with the then-novel experience of enjoying a wide variety of distinctive beers that had been produced on-site. Hall wanted to not only cater to his customers’ tastes, but to challenge them as well. Goose Island’s brewers set to work crafting a diverse selection of unique beers – and on Friday, May 13, 1988 the Goose Island Brewpub was born. It turned out that John was right; Chicagoans palates evolved rapidly once Goose Island’s Brewpub opened its doors and introduced the city to distinctive craft beer. By 1995, the brewpub had become so popular that John Hall and his son Greg, who had by then become Goose Island’s brewmaster, decided to open a larger brewery and bottling plant to keep up with demand. Finding still more room for growth, in 1999 the father-son team opened a second Goose Island Brewpub just a stone’s throw away from historic Wrigley Field.
Brewer Brand Hype: Toffee brown, medium-bodied, with a creamy head and an aroma of raisins and freshly baked dark bread. Mild Winter’s rich caramel malt and spicy rye flavors are sure to take the bite out of whatever Old Man Winter brews up for you this year.

The Brewski Review: Nice deep amber/brown color. Or, as Goose Island states - toffee color. I thought it was tasty and so did my wife who wanted me to purchase a six pack. Of course, I beat her to the punch and drank most of it before she had the chance. Hey, I need a drink to help me unravel from a metally stressful day of having to deal with the weather, house, my job/boss/coworkers, whatever excuse is handy. But, March is here upon us so we’ll be shelving the seasonal winter brews for the time being. I beleive I have one more tucked back in the fridge I need to polish off. I’ll take care of that soon. Would I drink this again? sure. Maybe I’ll have to visit Goose Island next time I’m in Chicago to visit the relatives. You know, for research.
Drinkability: Bought a whole six pack. So, yes.
Appearance: Large head. Deep amber/brown color.
The Buds: Tastly winter ale.

Label: This beer’s name sums up the idea of bringing the best together to celebrate. It is filled with seasonal flavors from generous amounts of toasted and caramel malts, mixed with equally generous amounts of honey, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. We feel it’s the perfect libation, filled with flavors of the season.
The Brewski Review: The pace of the work around my house has slowed considerably. When I concoct a project in my I do myself no favors by limiting my time. What I need to do is take my planned timeline and multiply it by five so I’ll be closer to a realistic completion date. Case in point: my wife and I went shopping for the kids at the verable toy institution Toys-r-Us a few days ago. I noticed a wooden train set assembled on a little wooden table. What a great idea. A simple little table. I figured it would take longer to map out the cuts on a 1/2 pc of plywood than to assemble the table. Wrong. The project took me about a month to complete. Between work and the family, I don’t have the time to complete these project so I don’t know why I sign up for them. Yet, I still get pulled by my wife about not spending enough time with the family or considering them before my projects. She says I do things I ‘want’ to do like work on the house, cars or our rental property while she does things she ‘has’ to do like take care of the kids and cook. I drop my head in defeat. I always hope I win the lottery because I see no way out of this quandry. Until then, I keep plugging along…..all without the help of a therapist. Remarkable isn’t it? Maybe I should drink more often. This beer would be a good place to start. Says Ale brewed with honey and spices. It didn’t appear to add much to the taste because I didn’t think it was all that fantastic. Maybe if I were to have drank it outside in the bittery cold it would warm me up and taste better? Perhaps, but why would I want to do that? Oh yeah, the table? See pics of how it turned out. Finished it on New Years Eve Day. (Obviously, this article is back-dated.)
Drinkability: Average winter warmer. Wouldn’t drink it again.
Appearance: Generous head at pour. Dissipates quickly.
The Buds: Honey & Spice flavor didn’t stand out.

The completed project. The whole set up on top of the table was destroyed about 5 minutes after my son came in the room. He likes to walk through and detroy anything your doing or working on. As a parent your supposed to nurture your child's strong points. Aside from encouraging him to be a demolitions expert, I'm at a loss.

The Brewski Review: My wife told me a hilarious story the other day. She took our two kids to get new shoes at the local Stride Rite store. As she was focused on my daughter getting fitted our son was at the other end of the store pulling all the shoes off the shelves. (Many of the polite daycare employees have told us, quite diplomatically, that our two year old is ‘all boy’.) When my wife caught him in the act he throws his arms up and says ‘Uh no’ which is code for ‘what happened here?’. As he’s being approached, he smiles and runs. Of course, that isn’t the end of the story. In his mind if he’s going down, he’s going down BIG. As he’s running from the law (mom) he holds out both arms open wide to create as much collateral damage as possible. He pulls the slippers off the shelves and most of the socks. I’m sure it was the hardest pair of shoes the clerk had to sell all month. Oh yeah, the beer? Tasty. A very mild bock beer with minimal aftertaste. The spices weren’t overwhelming by any mean - very subtle. It didn’t warm me up as other winter beers have done but it was good nonetheless. I believe this is a very worthy winter beer to add to you list. Happy Holidays!
Drinkability: Will be drinking this one again.
Appearance: Dark, amber brown in color.
The Buds: A mild beer. No big aftertaste.

The Brewski Review: Grumpy Gus woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning. In the middle of the night I awoke and wondered where my life was compared to where I wanted it to be. The trigger was a comment my wife made a few days ago about seeing a former female friend of mine in a grocery store parking lot. There was neither an exchange of words or glances but the tell stuck with me. This woman and her husband both have MBA’s, have great jobs that they love and, of course, the money and ’stuff’ to go along with it. They seems to have it all. As you can imagine this type of thinking is corrosive. The grass is always greener right? Some of you know what I’m talking about. My point is that everyone’s expectation of life should always be more - and I’m not strickly talking monitary rewards. How about purpose? Peace of mind? A well balanced life? An improved body, mind and spirit? You should always strive to be the best. Some days it’s difficult but I try. I hope you do to. And, to improve your taste buds, try picking up a six of this beer - James Boag’s Premium Lager. I was surprised how this beer tasted. Well, I guess I shouldn’t say surprised because I really didn’t have any preconcieved notion as to how it should taste. Maybe I should say…I was pleased with the taste of this beer. There was some nice malt taste and a little hoppy but very well balanced. Very smooth and mild.
Drinkability: Most definitely.
Appearance: Pale golden color.
The Buds: Smoooooooth.

Brewer Info: Luigi Moretti’s “Beer and ice factory” was founded more than a century ago in Udine, in the Friuli region. At that time, Udine was a sleepy little town, surrounded by stone walls that had been built by the local community as far back as 1350. It was at an important time during the unification of Italy. At that time, the whole of the Friuli region was still annexed to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and patriotic uprisings in the city were frequent. It is no coincidence that an Austrian garrison was stationed in the castle that dominates Udine, and that cannons were placed in the main square. It was during this very climate of unrest that the then 37-year-old Luigi Moretti – in the same year as the famous battles of San Martino and Solferino – looking to the future with conviction and confidence, decided to build his brewery. Born into a family of wealthy merchants, Luigi Moretti was at that time already familiar with wholesale trading in cereals, wine, spirits, foodstuffs and – naturally – even beer, which his family purchased from nearby Austria. At the time his small factory was inaugurated, its founder certainly could not have imagined how it would grow in the future. The first bottle of Birra Moretti was sold in the summer of 1860. The machinery used then was extremely advanced for its time, just as that used today is also at the cutting edge. From the 1990s on, Birra Moretti went from being a Friuli-based beer to a nationally-distributed beer, constantly growing and conquering new fans and admirers.

Brewer Brand Hype: Birra Moretti is a quality beer made in the traditional way. It is the result of a production process that has remained almost unchanged since 1859. The best raw materials are used to make Birra Moretti, as well as a special blend of high quality hops that gives it a unique taste and fragrance, enhancing its perfectly balanced bitter taste. It is a bottom fermented beer with a golden colour. This colouring is a result of the type of malt used in brewing. Its alcohol content is 4.6% alcohol by volume, a percentage that makes it ideal for any time of day. In fact, it is not a strong beer and is therefore perfect for drinking at lunch, at dinner or for evenings out with friends.

The Brewski Review: I’ve been a little behind on my reviews. I actually back date them so that the posting date is the date that I reviewed the beer. If I actually had the time to write a review the day I drank a beer, It would be an amazing feat. My guess is that my wife and kids would be out of the house all day which is a stretch. But, even more remarkable is that I wouldn’t have any projects around the house to complete. I’ve noted that my den is finished and I’m moving on to two more rooms to remodel. But, to do this, I need to clean them out. I actually spend a full 12 hour day packing up my wife’s scrap booking material. A WHOLE day! Now you can understand why I don’t get much done. I’ve got 6 solid days into cleaning out these rooms and I’m still not done (Contrary to what you may be thinking, we are not ‘Hoarders: Buried Alive’ as you might see on TLC). Of course, I’ve been doing some 5S work in the process (Japanese version: seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu and shitsuke; Translated to English: sorting, straightening, sweeping, standardizing and sustaining.) My version of sorting - two piles: one pile for keeping and one pile for some future pending garage sale. My assesment of this whole timeline would be dramatically reduced if I just started dumping things into boxes. But why box it up, store it and unpack it later? And, my wife needs to be present for some of this sorting: all she needs to do is stand there and answer my very basic question: Do you want it or not. Of course, it’s never as simple to her as it seems like it should be. But I’m just as guilty. I opened a four tubes of old posters I’ve kept for some time. Many of them were beer posters (collected before I was of legal drinking age) and the usual kid stuff: dirtbikes, cars, etc. Did I toss any of these out? No.
Drinkability: Nah. I’d try something else first.
Appearance: Medium golden color. Not much head.
The Buds: Good but a little bitter on the backside.

The Brewski Review: I was moving junk from my basement to the garage attic today in an effort to make more room in the basement for more junk. Circular isn’t it? We’re not big consumers which is a good thing. My wife and I don’t think we have much stuff but we tend not to throw much away. While performing this mundane task several times from our air conditioned house to a garage attic that was well over 100 degrees, I thought it was high time I pull open the fridge and treat myself to a cold beverage. Juice boxes. No. Water. No. Coors Light. Okay, I’ll try one. And, might I say, what a dissapointment it was. There wasn’t much ‘beer’ flavor but if you wanted to drink a lot of beer, this choice may rank up at the top. Very watery. Very blah. I can only think that Coors Brewery has been distracted lately and their attention has been turned away from brewing beer. Take a look at the ‘Brewer Info’ above: why would a company integrate their equal opportunity employment policy into their marketing strategy? PR issues? Do they have a discrimination lawsuits on the docket or what? Hopefully this was just a poor pick of venues to eagerly promote their HR policy. My feeling is that Coors should remove the wording. I wouldn’t think this is advancing Coors Light’s marketshare. But, I could be all wrong on this one. Perhaps Coors drinkers are very litigious individuals.
Drinkability: A guest left some at my house. It was free. Wouldn’t buy any myself.

The Buds: Minimal taste. Watery. Session beer.

The Brewski Review: **Disclaimer: Animal lovers should NOT read this post.** That said, I’ve set a rat trap to kill the chipmunks burrowing around my house. Wisdom gained from my father. He told me this a while ago but I never really followed through until the chipmunks started burrowing through the corner of my wood porch decking. Arrrrg! The guantlet was thrown. I didn’t even bother to bait the traps, just place them in their travel path. Pow! Pow! Pow! Three in a row at one hole. Some time went by and the hole came up dry so I moved onto another. Pow! Pow! Another two. At this point, I thought about getting little chipmunk stickers with X’s through them so I could apply them to my front door - much like the WWII fighter pilots did on their planes when they had a confirmed enemy kill. My high was great until one day the trap came up missing. What the…?! In the back of my mind I made a mental note: go to store later to buy another varmit exterminator. Before that happened, my wife came home from her morning walk and said our trap was out in the street with a dead chipmunk. DANG! That must have been one bad*ss furry rodent. I figured he got his back legs trapped and he pulled himself and the trap about 60′ to the road with his front legs. I’m not sure if this was possible but that was the only explaination I could muster. Anyway, I head out to the road to retrieve the contraption and come to find out it was run over. Everything, including the chipmunk, was crushed. DRAT! About a week later my wife was chatting with the neighbor across the street and she told my wife that she watched a cat walking across the street with the chipmunk (and trap) in it’s mouth and get run over by a car. A devilish grin crossed my face when I heard this story. It was probably the same neighborhood cat that was using our flower beds as it’s litterbox. Talk about irony. Anyway, it turned out to be one very bad day for the chipmunk and the cat. But, on the bright side, my day was looking up. I would like to say I celebrated with a beer but that wasn’t the case. Had I, Sam Adams’ Boston Lager wouldn’t be that beer. Although a decent beer, it was a little hoppy for my tastes. I would drink it again if offered to me for free. I doubt I’d purchase any. Oh yeah, the moral of the story? There is no such think in life as a free lunch.

The Brewski Review: Unlike the experience I had with the Strawberry Harvest from Abita, Purple Haze was much appreciated improvement in taste. The Raspberry aroma and taste is very noticable and very tasty to my buds. It’s a light summer beer that is crisp and light. The tartly sweet taste may be present but I didn’t detect it when I slugged down my drink. I normally don’t pound my beverages but this time around I was stressed. Our town was putting on a fireworks show and my wife invited two of her sisters and their kids over to watch the extravaganza from our back yard. Along with these ‘adults’ came about a dozen uninvited individuals. Not a big deal right? I can roll with the punches. But what was really disturbing was that no one thought to bring anything other than beer. No chairs, bug spray, beverages (other than beer), etc. Mind you, within this group there were 9 children ranging from 1 1/2 yrs old to approx. 13 years. And, since we weren’t expecting all these individuals to show up, we weren’t prepared to entertain or hydrate them. And don’t get me started on their kids…..Arggg! No discipline and no respect (Do ya think parental upbringing?). Anyone have experiences like this? Guess I’m old school when it comes to manners. The sad thing out of this whole ordeal is that the underlying comment was that it would be a great location to watch the fireworks next year - implying that they’ll be back. It’s bad enough to come uninvited once. But to grease the tracks for a another uninvited showing really shows some moxie. Maybe next year we’ll go out of town (which, I’m sure, won’t stop them from coming over to our house and trashing it.)
Drinkability: Yes. Would drink this one again.
Appearance: Deep gold color. Slightly cloudy.
The Buds: Good. Raspberry flavor right out of the bottle.

Brewer Info: In his travels across Europe, beer-lover John Hall had enjoyed a distinctive local brew in each region he visited. Hall was convinced that Midwesterners could produce beers as good or better than those he’d tasted in his travels. Living on the shore of the largest system of fresh water on the planet Earth, in a city with rapidly evolving tastes – John decided that his hometown, Chicago, would be the ideal place to do just that. The key to building interest in craft beer, Hall decided, was to allow consumers to watch the brewing process – while providing them with the then-novel experience of enjoying a wide variety of distinctive beers that had been produced on-site. Hall wanted to not only cater to his customers’ tastes, but to challenge them as well. Goose Island’s brewers set to work crafting a diverse selection of unique beers – and on Friday, May 13, 1988 the Goose Island Brewpub was born. It turned out that John was right; Chicagoans palates evolved rapidly once Goose Island’s Brewpub opened its doors and introduced the city to distinctive craft beer. By 1995, the brewpub had become so popular that John Hall and his son Greg, who had by then become Goose Island’s brewmaster, decided to open a larger brewery and bottling plant to keep up with demand. Finding still more room for growth, in 1999 the father-son team opened a second Goose Island Brewpub just a stone’s throw away from historic Wrigley Field.

The Brewski Review: This was a very good beer. Light and refreshing. Kölsch is said to have medium hop bitternes but this didn’t jump out at me. I thought it was rather mild and crisp. My wife liked it so much she asked me to pick up a six pack for her. The name is a derivitation of the city name Cologne (Germany) and only brewers within the city producing under certain guidelines were allowed to use the name Kölsch. In America though, it was used rather liberally to reflect any pale beer that’s just barely withing reach of being a lager. Considered a seasonal beer best consumed in the summertime - hence the name, Summertime. So get out and enjoy everything that Summertime has to offer.
Drinkability: Did end up drinking another before I finished this review.
Appearance: Clear, pale golden color.
The Buds: Very tasty. Crisp and refreshing. Mild.
